Our Organisation
The British Malaysian Society is an inclusive organisation. Whether your connection with Malaysia is through business, education or simply living there and visiting, you are most welcome to join us. You will then have the opportunity to come to any event on our current and future programme and meet like-minded people at functions designed to keep you up to date with Malaysian current affairs.
For members wanting more from their membership there is the opportunity to get involved with the Society’s operation and its Management Committees. To produce the high calibre events and projects seen over the past few years the assistance of its existing members is invaluable.
Education and Culture
Management aims to encourage productive links between those involved in cultural and educational activities in Malaysia and the United Kingdom in both the public and private sectors.
A range of projects is currently being supported. The long-established BMS Book Project makes sure that reading books are transferred from the UK to primary schools in rural areas in Malaysia in order to improve pupils’ English language skills in reading, writing, speaking and usage. Books are collected from UK schools, despatched to Malaysia where they are sorted and distributed to schools by the Centre for British Teachers (CfBT) or Brighton Education Sdn Bhd. Plans to extend the scheme to secondary schools are being examined.
Through its contacts management seeks to facilitate active professional cooperation at university and college levels between Malaysian and the United Kingdom institutions.
A strong interest is developing in helping UK maintained and independent schools which are thinking about setting up a branch in Malaysia or about establishing close professional links with Malaysian educational organisations. Seminars for headteachers and governors on the challenges associated with this endeavour have been held in joint enterprise by the BMS and Anthony Millard Consulting.
The British Malaysian Society (BMS) and The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts (PSTA) have jointly established an academic scholarship for a two year MA programme in London for a qualifying Malaysian student. The scholarship is being given in memory of the late Tengku Ismail bin Tengku Su, whose collection of traditional and contemporary songket from Terengganu was a major feature of the 2011 exhibition, “Royal Weaves: Traditional Textile Arts of Malaysia”. Tengku Ismail passed away in London on 13 August 2011 two months after the exhibition.
